Welcome to Champaign Regional Speedskating
Champaign Regional Speedskating’s mission is to support the enjoyment and performance of the Speedskating. We gather to practice on the ice most Wednesday during the academic year at 6 pm.
We also gather off the ice throughout the year for strength and conditioning sessions called “Dry Land Training.” Dry Land often includes in-line roller skates or the use of a “slide board” that allows a skater to practice the skating movements a on small, slippery surface.
Go Fast --- Turn Left
It sounds simple, but there’s so much to doing it well. It’s both a great competitive sport for children of all ages and also a terrific activity for adults and families. Competitive divisions are determined by age and ability, so everybody can enjoy the fun of a going fast and turning left.
Technique is critical. The faster the skater, the quieter the blades. Skaters of all ages are welcomed. Young or new skaters must at least be able to skate around by themselves unassisted.
Parents will skate only if they too want to become members. Our US Speedskating certified coaches will look after young and new skaters. If the skater is under 18, a parent or guardian must stay during the session. Skaters work with coaches and fellow members based on age and skill.
Practice consists of a series of warm-ups followed by technique drills, race exercises, and skating games. The members conclude with a cool down.
Membership And Cost Issues
New members can be our guests for three weeks. Each week, guest members must obtain a “one-day one-skate membership” to our national organization US Speedskating.
Continuing members can then join by completing our membership process. Local fees include money for ice time and club expenses, and these fees run about $425 for a full year. Family discounts are available. Half is paid in August and the other half in January.
We try to make skates available for rental at $75 per year, or we can help advancing skaters perchase their own equipment.
Skaters who choose to participate in the additional off-ice strengh and technique sessions and out of town meets are asked to contribute to a coaching fund used to offset some of these expenses. This runs about $100 to $200 per year depending on the level of involvment.
Finally, membership to Champaign Regional Speedskating also requires skaters to become members of our regional organization, Amateur Skating Association of Illinois, and our national organization, US Speedskating. These fees are about $45 per year.
